Anime Aoashi’s Secret Weapon, Turning Soccer Strategy Into Dynamic Animation

VOIDMANGA – Aoashi stands out among sports anime because its focus goes beyond dramatic victories and extraordinary players. The series places considerable attention on positioning, decision-making, teamwork, and the difficult process of learning how professional soccer actually works.
At the center of that journey is Ashito Aoi, a young player whose natural talent must be reshaped after he enters the demanding youth system of a professional football club. One of Ashito’s most important strengths is his unusual ability to understand the entire pitch at once. Rather than concentrating only on the player carrying the ball, he can mentally visualize where teammates and opponents are located and predict how the situation may develop.
This perspective eventually becomes a crucial part of his growth as a footballer—and interestingly, it also reflects how the anime's production team approaches its soccer sequences. During a presentation at Anime NYC, Aoashi producer Junichi Katsutani explained the extensive preparation required to bring the manga's matches to life. One of the biggest production challenges is maintaining a consistent understanding of all 22 players.

In a manga, an artist can frame a single moment without showing every movement that happened beforehand. Animation, however, must connect each action naturally, particularly when the ball travels between multiple players.
To solve this problem, the production staff first creates a simplified overhead simulation of the entire field. Each player is represented by an icon, allowing the team to map out movements and follow the ball from one player to another. This functions almost like a tactical blueprint, ensuring that the animators know where everyone is positioned throughout a sequence before the final animation is produced.
The planning process is followed by motion capture. Individual soccer plays are performed and recorded, with the resulting movements immediately appearing in a rough digital form. The production team can then review the performance and identify movements that do not feel convincing. If necessary, the sequence can be performed again until the desired result is achieved.
