Review of the Manga Finale of The Summer Hikaru Died, Ready for Season 2!

--

VOIDNITY - The manga The Summer Hikaru Died by Mokumokuren has officially concluded, ending a five-year journey that spans 10 volumes. Steeped in a chilling atmosphere—rich with both cosmic and psychological horror—the story unfolds as a supernatural presence takes root among the residents of a rural community.

It follows Yoshiki Tsujinaka as he grapples with the death of his friend, Hikaru Indou, whose body has been possessed by a terrifying, otherworldly entity. The manga steadily raises the stakes, eventually threatening Yoshiki’s own humanity and the entire community, all while exploring bizarre rituals and weaving in queer themes within a coming-of-age narrative.

The Summer Hikaru Died, published in English by Yen Press, reached its conclusion with the release of chapter 51 on October 20, 2026.

The finale leaves plenty of room for discussion; it reveals the fate of the residents of Kibogayama following the sealing of the "hole" that connected the world of the living to the "Other Side," as well as the aftermath of the landslide in Kubitachi. It addresses whether Yoshiki and "Hikaru" managed to survive and clarifies the ultimate outcomes for the rest of the cast.

The Finale of The Summer Hikaru Died

Chapter 51 of The Summer Hikaru Died begins with a one-year time jump, during which a funeral is held for Hikaru Indou—a ceremony requested by his mother, Yuki Indou, following his disappearance during the Kubitachi landslide.

Asako recalls how the landslide resulted in no casualties other than Hikaru’s disappearance; everyone else was successfully evacuated, and the event was attributed solely to a shift in the terrain. Life goes on, with no one realizing that the disaster could have been far worse, had the "hole" not been sealed by Yoshiki and Hikaru.

While everyone else mourns Hikaru Indou, Yuki herself is aware that the real Hikaru had, in fact, passed away long ago. Consequently, he mourns the "other" Hikaru—an entity he had come to cherish as if it were his own child. It is revealed that both Yoshiki and this "Hikaru" survived.

Although Yoshiki was buried under rubble upon emerging from the "hole"—losing a leg and suffering a near-fatal abdominal wound—he survived because "Hikaru" shared a portion of its own being with him. This created a new aspect within Yoshiki, one that shares the essence of "Hikaru" and continues to reconstruct his body.

The two are rescued by Tanaka, who notes that Yoshiki is no longer human and that it is unclear how long he can endure in this state. Tanaka decides to tie up loose ends regarding the organization and takes both Yoshiki and "Hikaru" with him, expressing a hope that they might live a good life before eventually passing away—subtly implying that they, too, may complete the natural life cycle experienced by all humans.

Yet, the most poignant aspect of the conclusion is that, much like Tanaka, Yoshiki—having become something more than a mere "hybrid entity"—is forgotten by everyone who lacks spiritual perception, including his own family.

While the manga shows that Yoshiki’s sister, Kaoru, manages to overcome her isolation and return to attending classes regularly, Yoshiki’s mother is depicted weeping, sensing the loss of something vital—a hint that she can no longer remember Yoshiki.

It is also revealed that Rie Kurebayashi survived after closing the "hole" at her residence; she is later seen in a hospital, visited by her daughter. Thus, Tanaka’s words suggest that although he and Yoshiki may remain forgotten while they live, they will eventually be reunited with their families, offering a glimmer of hope for their future.

Ending of The Summer Hikaru Died Means for Yoshiki and "Hikaru"

Despite everything they have endured, both Yoshiki and "Hikaru" are now embarking on a new life. "Hikaru" asks Yoshiki to give him a name—a name that belongs uniquely to him. Yoshiki chose the name "Natsuki," explaining that he picked it because it belonged to a dog he had seen when he was a child—a dog with a rather peculiar face.

Although Japanese kanji characters often carry specific meanings, the way "Natsuki" is written here is left open to the reader's interpretation. Nevertheless, given that "Natsu" means "summer" and "ki" is associated with "spirit," it is a fitting name for him.

The manga highlights just how much happier Yoshiki has become, with several consecutive pages showing him laughing freely for the very first time.

The story concludes with Yoshiki telling Natsuki that he is glad to have met him, suggesting that their journey together has only just begun.

Given that chapter 50 of The Summer Hikaru Died clarifies Yoshiki’s feelings toward the original Hikaru—revealing that Hikaru never viewed him as a romantic interest—it can be inferred that Natsuki truly values Yoshiki for who he is, rather than harboring feelings stemming from the body he currently inhabits.

Nevertheless, whether the relationship between Yoshiki and Natsuki should be considered romantic is left to the reader’s interpretation. Although the manga ends without additional panels depicting their future, the author, Mokumokuren, indicated in a post on X that fans can look forward to new illustrations in the final volume.

While an official release date has not yet been confirmed, it is expected to be published around early 2027. The author’s closing remarks also hint at the underlying message they intended to convey throughout the story of The Summer Hikaru Died.
