Naruto Live-Action Could Take a Bold New Direction With Major Character Changes
--
VOIDMANGA – The upcoming Naruto live-action movie may not follow every aspect of Masashi Kishimoto’s original manga exactly. A new industry report has sparked discussion among fans after suggesting that the adaptation could preserve the foundation of the first story arc while introducing notable changes to the personalities and backgrounds of several key characters.
One of the most unexpected alterations reportedly concerns Naruto Uzumaki himself. According to insider Daniel Richtman, the young ninja could be portrayed as someone who has a strong interest in history. Interestingly, the change would not completely remove his familiar academic struggles, meaning the film could present Naruto as a character with a particular intellectual passion despite not being a strong student overall.
This would give the live-action version a slightly different way of presenting Naruto beyond his usual image as a troublemaking student desperate for recognition. The central aspects of his personality and journey are reportedly expected to remain intact, suggesting that the filmmakers are experimenting with additional character traits rather than completely reinventing him.

Sakura Haruno could receive an even more substantial rewrite. Reports claim that her family circumstances will become considerably darker, with her father allegedly dying before the main events of the film. Her relationship with her mother is also said to be strained, potentially giving Sakura a stronger emotional motivation from the beginning of the story.
The adaptation may also adjust Sakura’s feelings toward Sasuke Uchiha. Instead of presenting her interest in him exactly as it appears in the original story, the movie reportedly intends to make the dynamic more balanced, with Sasuke potentially showing some degree of interest in Sakura as well. If accurate, this could alter the early relationship between the members of Team 7.
Despite these changes, the live-action project is reportedly still anchored around the first major arc of Naruto. The insider report claims that a number of scenes could remain extremely close to the manga, with the main alterations focused on character development and backstories rather than completely restructuring the narrative.

The project is being developed by Lionsgate, with Destin Daniel Cretton attached as writer and director. Cretton, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has previously received support from Kishimoto, who praised the filmmaker’s approach to character-driven storytelling.
The production has now entered a more active phase. The official Naruto website announced that the filmmakers are conducting a worldwide casting search for the three young members of Team 7: Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura. Other roles are expected to be cast afterward.
For now, however, fans should treat the reported character changes as unconfirmed information rather than official plot details. Lionsgate has yet to formally reveal the complete cast or confirm these reported alterations. The film also does not yet have an announced release date, leaving plenty of room for further changes before production moves forward.
If these reports prove accurate, the live-action Naruto movie could take an interesting middle ground: retaining recognizable elements from the original manga while giving its characters new motivations suited to a feature-film format. Whether those changes will strengthen the adaptation or disappoint longtime fans will only become clear once official footage and more story details are revealed.
